Your view on transportation planning and optimization for efficient route planning?
ANSWER: It is key for logistics service providers, hauliers as well as for shippers from all vertical industries to take care of the optimization of their transport operation – whether they organize and perform the transport using own vehicles or by subcontracting it to third parties. Logistics costs and as a major part of this the cost for the physical transport of goods represent a considerable proportion of the total cost of a product. Cost savings between 10 and 20% by using adequate solutions for transport optimization such as PTV Smartour can be achieved. Those savings usually result in less vehicle capacity to be used and/or more customer orders and services to be performed. The performance of transport services become plannable and as a consequence more reliable. With respect to more and more challenging transport service requirements (in time delivery, shorter delivery time windows, ad hoc deliveries) on the one side but increasing cost for the transport operation on the other, transport planning and optimization solutions are an important element to success for many companies.

Q: What role would transport planning and optimization solutions play in UAE in context to Logistic?
ANSWER: As it looks to me at the moment there is quite some room for planning and optimization solutions in the UAE market. Historically not so many companies have such real transport optimization systems in place. But with increasing costs and more challenging customer requirements more and more companies will benefit from solutions by companies such as PTV Group. It is important that a solution like PTV Smartour can be connected to existing “leading” system such as ERP or WMS and can be directly linked to telematics systems widely used by many companies in the region to control the execution of the routes planned.

Q: How receptive are companies to adopting new technologies?
ANSWER: Like everywhere in the world, companies and in particular those with a longer history and experiences in their own operation hesitate to change processes. It is important to understand that the introduction of new technologies such as IT systems for planning and optimization are usually connected with the change of processes, both within the company but often also in relation with the business partners outside the company. As a consequence - at least for larger projects - it is important that all teams in a company are involved into the implementation process of new IT systems such as the IT department, the logistics department but also the customer care and sales departments. If this is done properly, the results of such new planning and optimisation solutions will be easily understood, are supported by all stakeholders and gain maximum benefits.

Q: What kind of new solutions do you think will adopt in the near future?
ANSWER: There are mainly two trends that are of high impact on the goods transportation: eCommerce and digitization. More and more customers - private but as also commercial customers - require short term deliveries at dedicated time windows of smaller order volumes. At the same time the whole transport process is embedded in a more and more real-time and transparent information flow. To be able to provide services that satisfy such customer needs a performant and reliable planning of the transport operation is an absolutely necessary prerequisite. More and more this planning also needs to take into consideration any kind of incidents (e.g. delay due to traffic situation) also during the execution that result in a flexible modification of the planned routes and proactive information of the customers concerned.

Q: What do you think about platforms as 'Supply Chain & Logistic – Arabia’s” contribution to the growth of Logistics solution in UAE?
ANSWER: Platforms as “Supply Chain & Logistics – Arabia” are a great opportunity to help companies to learn about new developments, trends and market changes. They raise the awareness for certain topics as such and provide a valuable platform for information exchange. Participants can discuss their needs with experts from companies in the vertical or horizontal collaboration but also with solution providers and hear about most recent solutions that might be of interest to them.
